The best audiobooks on Audible are the ones where the narrator adds something the page cannot. Project Hail Mary, Dune, The Silent Patient, Atomic Habits and Born a Crime all clear that bar, and they are the first titles I would spend a credit on. Below are 20 titles across thrillers, sci-fi, fiction, self-help and memoir, each with its narrator, runtime and a reason to pick it.

Every title, narrator and runtime below was checked on Audible's own listings on 18 October 2026. Rating counts and chart positions change daily, so treat them as a snapshot. If you do not have a membership yet, my Audible review covers whether it is worth it, and the best audiobook subscriptions comparison covers the alternatives.

Key takeaways

  • The best Audible book to start with is Project Hail Mary: 16h10m, narrated by Ray Porter, with more than 315,000 ratings on Audible.
  • For a short first listen, Atomic Habits (5h35m, read by author James Clear) and The Psychology of Money (5h54m) are the quickest wins.
  • Dual-narrator thrillers such as The Silent Patient and Verity use two voices for two points of view, which is where audio has a real edge over print.
  • Long books are cheaper per hour on a credit. Dune runs 21h2m and Fourth Wing 22h2m, and each costs one credit.
  • Audible's own charts in October 2026 are led by thrillers and romantasy, with Matt Dinniman's Dungeon Crawler Carl series taking 8 of the top 14 spots on the Most Listened chart.

What makes a great Audible book

A great audiobook is a good book plus a narrator who disappears into it. Three things separate the titles that work on audio from the ones that are better on paper.

First, narration. A single skilled voice such as Ray Porter on Project Hail Mary or Jim Dale on Harry Potter carries a whole cast. Multicast productions like Dune go further and give each character a different actor.

Second, structure. Thrillers with short chapters and cliffhangers survive being listened to on a commute. Dense nonfiction with tables and footnotes does not.

Third, length against your habits. A 22-hour book is a month of 45-minute walks. A 5-hour book is a weekend. Check the runtime before you spend the credit.

Best thrillers on Audible

A runner in an autumn park wearing wireless earbuds

The Silent Patient

By Alex Michaelides, narrated by Jack Hawkins and Louise Brealey, 8h33m. A woman stops speaking after a violent crime and a therapist becomes obsessed with her silence. The two narrators split the points of view, which makes the twist land harder on audio. More than 89,000 ratings on Audible.

Verity

By Colleen Hoover, narrated by Vanessa Johansson and Amy Landon, 8h10m. A ghostwriter finds a manuscript she was never meant to read. It was still number 5 on Audible's Most Listened chart on 18 October 2026, which is a long run for a thriller.

The Witch

By Freida McFadden, narrated by Saskia Maarleveld and Marin Ireland, 9h31m. It sat at number 1 on Audible's Bestsellers chart and number 3 on Most Listened when I checked. If you want to know what other listeners are choosing this week, this is the one.

Best sci-fi and fantasy audiobooks

Project Hail Mary

By Andy Weir, narrated by Ray Porter, 16h10m. A lone astronaut wakes up with no memory and a mission to save the Earth. It has 315,006 ratings at 4.9 stars on Audible, the largest rating count of any title I checked. Porter gives the book's alien character a voice that is hard to imagine on the page.

The Martian

By Andy Weir, narrated by Wil Wheaton, 10h59m. A stranded astronaut talks himself through survival on Mars. The humor works well read aloud, and at under 11 hours it is a good entry point if Project Hail Mary feels long.

Dune

By Frank Herbert, narrated by Scott Brick, Orlagh Cassidy, Euan Morton and others, 21h2m. A full multicast production of the classic desert-planet epic, with more than 127,000 ratings. The cast helps with the political scenes, where a single reader would blur the characters together.

Fourth Wing

By Rebecca Yarros, narrated by Rebecca Soler and Teddy Hamilton, 22h2m. Dragon riders at a war college, told from two points of view. A separate dramatized adaptation also exists, in two parts of 7h52m and 10h40m, so check which edition you are buying.

Dungeon Crawler Carl

By Matt Dinniman, narrated by Jeff Hays, 13h31m. A survival game show inside a dungeon, and the book that started a series that now fills 8 of the top 14 places on Audible's Most Listened chart, all read by Jeff Hays. Number 3 on Bestsellers and number 7 on Most Listened on the day I checked.

Best fiction audiobooks

The Midnight Library

By Matt Haig, narrated by Carey Mulligan, 8h50m. A woman between life and death gets to try the lives she did not live. Mulligan's calm delivery suits the premise. More than 71,000 ratings.

Lessons in Chemistry

By Bonnie Garmus, narrated by Miranda Raison, Bonnie Garmus and Pandora Sykes, 11h55m. A chemist fights for her place in a 1960s lab. The author reads part of the audiobook herself, which is a nice touch. 38,918 ratings.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

By J.K. Rowling, narrated by Jim Dale, 8h18m. Dale's version of the series has more than 204,000 ratings on this book alone. Audible also lists a Stephen Fry edition under the UK title, at 8h25m, if you prefer his reading.

Pride and Prejudice

By Jane Austen, narrated by Lindsay Duncan (Audible Studios), 12h3m. Rated 4.7 stars from 5,261 ratings. Classics are cheap to try, and a good narrator makes the dialogue easier to follow than the page does.

Best romance and book club audiobooks

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

By Taylor Jenkins Reid, narrated by Alma Cuervo, Julia Whelan and Robin Miles, 12h10m. A fading film star finally tells her story to a young journalist. Three narrators give the past and the present their own voices, which suits the structure. It has more than 98,000 ratings on Audible, so it is one of the safest picks for a first romance on audio.

Daisy Jones & The Six

By Taylor Jenkins Reid, narrated by a full cast that includes Jennifer Beals, Benjamin Bratt and Judy Greer, 9h3m. The story is told as an oral history of a fictional 1970s rock band, which is why a full cast works so well: each band member sounds like a different person giving an interview. If you like the idea of a story told as interviews, this audio experience beats the print edition.

Book Lovers

By Emily Henry, narrated by Julia Whelan, 11h23m. A literary agent and a book editor keep meeting in a small town. Julia Whelan is a prolific audiobook narrator, and her humor and timing carry the banter. Emily Henry's Happy Place, also read by Julia Whelan, runs 11h3m, so you can stay with one narrator if you want more.

Best historical fiction audiobooks

The Nightingale

By Kristin Hannah, narrated by Polly Stone, 17h19m. Two sisters live through the German occupation of France in World War II. More than 120,000 ratings on Audible, and at 17 hours it is a good value for one credit.

The Dutch House

By Ann Patchett, narrated by Tom Hanks, 9h53m. A novel about a family, a house and the siblings who lose it. It was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and Tom Hanks reads it with a calm that makes a quiet novel easy to follow. It has more than 59,000 ratings on Audible and fits a long weekend.

Best self-help audiobooks

Atomic Habits

By James Clear, narrated by the author, 5h35m. One of the shortest big-name self-help books on Audible, with more than 149,000 ratings. Short enough to finish in a week of commutes.

The Let Them Theory

By Mel Robbins, narrated by the author, 10h38m. Stop trying to control what other people do. Robbins reads it herself, and it has 29,891 ratings.

Best business and money audiobooks

Never Split the Difference

By Chris Voss and Tahl Raz, narrated by Michael Kramer, 8h7m. Negotiation lessons from a former FBI hostage negotiator. Kramer's reading keeps the stories moving. 66,473 ratings.

The Psychology of Money

By Morgan Housel, narrated by Chris Hill, 5h54m. Short essays on how people think about money, which suits listening in small chunks. 25,660 ratings. If you prefer to get the gist of business books in minutes rather than hours, see my Blinkist review.

Best memoir and nonfiction audiobooks

A tablet-style e-reader on a bedside table next to reading glasses and a mug

Educated

By Tara Westover, narrated by Julia Whelan, 12h10m. A memoir about growing up in a survivalist family and going to university for the first time. More than 129,000 ratings.

Born a Crime

By Trevor Noah, narrated by the author, 8h44m. Noah tells the story of growing up in South Africa under apartheid, and his accents and impressions are the reason to choose audio over print.

Spare

By Prince Harry, narrated by the author, 15h39m. A memoir read by its author, with 74,045 ratings.

Sapiens

By Yuval Noah Harari, narrated by Derek Perkins, 15h18m. A history of our species in 15 hours. 57,636 ratings.

Best audiobooks narrated by the author

Author-narrated audiobooks give you the writer's own phrasing and timing, which matters most in memoir and self-help. Five of the titles above fit:

  • Atomic Habits (5h35m), read by James Clear.
  • The Let Them Theory (10h38m), read by Mel Robbins.
  • Born a Crime (8h44m), read by Trevor Noah, whose accents and impressions are the point.
  • Spare (15h39m), read by Prince Harry.
  • Lessons in Chemistry, where Bonnie Garmus reads part of the audiobook alongside Miranda Raison and Pandora Sykes.

Comedic timing is hard to fake, so memoirs by comedians and broadcasters tend to work well when the author reads. Fiction usually works better with a trained narrator.

Best full cast and dramatized audiobooks

A full cast production uses several actors instead of one reader. It costs the same credit and often has more sound design, which suits big casts and long books.

  • Dune (21h2m) is a multicast production with Scott Brick, Orlagh Cassidy, Euan Morton and others.
  • Bram Stoker's Dracula (5h57m) is a dramatized version with Jonathan Bailey, Ella Purnell, Aimee Lou Wood and others. It was number 1 on Audible's Most Listened chart on 18 October 2026.
  • Fourth Wing has a separate two-part dramatized adaptation of 7h52m and 10h40m, next to the 22h2m edition with two narrators.

If you want one clear voice, pick the single-narrator edition. If you like an audio drama, check the title page for "full cast" or "dramatized" before you spend a credit.

Best short audiobooks under 10 hours

Short audiobooks are the easiest way to find out whether you like listening. These ten are all under 10 hours:

  • Atomic Habits: 5h35m
  • The Psychology of Money: 5h54m
  • Bram Stoker's Dracula, dramatized: 5h57m
  • Never Split the Difference: 8h7m
  • Verity: 8h10m
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: 8h18m
  • The Silent Patient: 8h33m
  • Born a Crime: 8h44m
  • The Midnight Library: 8h50m
  • The Witch: 9h31m

A 5-hour book is a long weekend of walks or a week of commutes. If you are new to audio, start here.

Best long audiobooks for the value of a credit

A credit costs the same whatever the length, so long books give you more hours for the money. The table uses the $14.95 Premium monthly price from Audible's own pages and divides it by the runtime.

TitleLengthCost per hour on one $14.95 credit
The Calamity Club28h44mAbout $0.52
He Who Fights with Monsters 1322h21mAbout $0.67
Fourth Wing22h2mAbout $0.68
Dune21h2mAbout $0.71
Project Hail Mary16h10mAbout $0.93
Spare15h39mAbout $0.96
Sapiens15h18mAbout $0.98
The Psychology of Money5h54mAbout $2.53
Atomic Habits5h35mAbout $2.68

On the annual plan, 12 credits cost $149.50, or about $12.46 a credit, which lowers every number in the table by roughly 17%. The cheapest hour is not always the best choice, though. A 28-hour book you abandon at hour six costs more per hour finished than a 6-hour book you complete.

How the narrator changes an audiobook

The narrator is the reason an audiobook can be better than the print book, or worse. A few examples from the list above:

  • Ray Porter reads Project Hail Mary and gives its alien character a distinct voice.
  • Jim Dale reads Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and his version has more than 204,000 ratings.
  • Carey Mulligan reads The Midnight Library with a calm delivery that suits the premise.
  • Jeff Hays reads every book in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, which is why the series dominates the Most Listened chart.
  • Julia Whelan reads Educated, a memoir that depends on a steady, intimate voice.
  • Michael Kramer reads Never Split the Difference, and keeps the negotiation stories moving.

Audible plays a sample of every title. Listen to two minutes before you buy, and if the voice annoys you in the sample it will annoy you for 12 hours.

What are the Audie Awards?

The Audie Awards are the Audio Publishers Association's annual awards for audiobooks, with categories for narration, production and genre. A title with an Audie nomination or win is usually a safe pick for performance, but I did not verify award histories for the titles above, so I have not claimed any.

Best audiobooks for work, chores and commutes

Audiobooks make routine tasks go faster, and the best ones for that are not the most complex. Pick:

  • Thrillers with short chapters, such as The Silent Patient and Verity.
  • Memoirs told in short stories, such as Born a Crime.
  • Self-help with clear sections, such as Atomic Habits.
  • Long series you can sink into, such as Dungeon Crawler Carl.

Avoid books with many names and places for a first listen, unless it is a full cast production that gives each character a voice.

Audible publishes two charts: Bestsellers (what people buy) and Most Listened (what people play). On 18 October 2026 the Most Listened top five was Bram Stoker's Dracula in a dramatized version (5h57m), He Who Fights with Monsters 13, The Witch, a Rebecca Yarros title and Verity.

The Bestsellers chart had The Witch, In the Shadow of Eight and Dungeon Crawler Carl at the top. The lesson is that listeners lean toward thrillers, romantasy and long LitRPG series. New releases such as The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett (28h44m) also sit in the top six of Most Listened, so a long new release is not a barrier.

How to choose which Audible book to spend a credit on

A credit buys one audiobook regardless of length, so the best value is usually a long, highly rated title. A few simple rules:

  • Pick by narrator, not only by author. Search the narrator's name on Audible and sort by rating.
  • Listen to the sample. Audible plays the first few minutes, and that tells you whether the voice suits you.
  • Check the edition. Several titles have a dramatized version and a single-narrator version, with different runtimes.
  • Use credits on long titles and buy short ones during sales. My Audible discounts and deals guide lists where the savings are.

Audible plans and cost

Audible's own pages list a Standard plan at $8.99 a month for one title a month and a Premium plan at $14.95 a month for one credit a month, both after a 30-day free trial. Annual Premium is $149.50 for 12 credits or $229.50 for 24. The Premium plan is called Premium Plus by many third parties, so you may see both names.

Credits you buy with a Premium plan stay in your library even if you cancel. The Standard plan's selections are only yours while you are a member. If you read more than you listen, compare it with Kindle Unlimited in my guide on whether Kindle Unlimited is worth it.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best-selling books on Audible?

On 18 October 2026 the top three on Audible's Bestsellers chart were The Witch by Freida McFadden, In the Shadow of Eight by Collin Gosselin and Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. The list changes daily.

Audible does not publish an all-time ranking. By rating count among the titles I checked, Project Hail Mary led with 315,006 ratings.

What is the best Audible book for a beginner?

Pick something under 10 hours with a strong narrator. The Martian (10h59m), Atomic Habits (5h35m) and Born a Crime (8h44m) are easy starts.

Are Audible books worth it?

Yes, if you finish at least one a month. A credit on the Premium plan works out to $14.95 for a book you keep. If you rarely finish a title, a library app or a cheaper plan makes more sense. Spotify is the other place many people listen, and my Spotify statistics page has the numbers.
